  • 1.5 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • cooking oil spray

Instructions

  1. Slice your peeled onion into nice, ½-inch thick rings.
  2. In a shallow dish, whisk together the all-purpose flour, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. In a second shallow dish, whisk together the buttermilk and the beaten egg.
  4. In a third shallow dish, pour in your panko breadcrumbs.
  5. Take each onion ring and dip it into the flour mixture, ensuring it’s coated on all sides. Shake off excess flour.
  6. Dip the floured onion ring into the buttermilk mixture, letting extra drip back.
  7. Dredge the wet onion ring in the panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere all around.
  8. Lightly spray the coated onion rings with cooking oil spray.
  9. Arrange the onion rings in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd.
  10. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 8-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.

Notes

Best enjoyed fresh and hot. To reheat and regain crispiness, use the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes.
